WWI Poems

“The Soldier” “The Soldier” was a nice well written poem by Brooke. His use of pastoral and gothic allowed him to go in more depth with his poem to give the reader imagery. While all this is happening he used the octave to give an obstacle to work around. At the beginning of the poem the voice talks about how if he were to die, then the rest of this poem will tell us what he wants us to remember him by. Like in the movie Troy, Brad Pitt (Achilles) went to “fight” at Troy only to keep his named remembered for the years to come. Which did work and now we get to learn of this great hero. In Brooke’s case he was remembered by his poems and when he died, was remembered by Winston Churchill and he used Brooke’s collection of poems as a recruitment drive for the war. “Dulce et Decorum Est” This poem has many uses of imagery in it. From bombs being launched; to gas poisoning. Owen wrote many of his poems to scare people from the war and tell them what it is really like. Also, I think that Owen tries to use simple phrases to keep them stuck in the readers mind, like “Dulce et Decorum est Pro patria mori” (LL. 27-28). The word “guttering” on line 16 suggests that the man is choking on poison gas, giving me the feeling that the man is gargling his own blood as he is being carried away to the truck. I envision this like in Pan’s Labyrinth when Ofelia meets the frog and the frog is guttering on its own insides, which then kills it. Nasty it is but, it’s amazing how different genres of movies and poetry can somehow link together. “The Glory of Women” “The Glory of Women” is nothing but irony. There is truth that women thought that the men were their heroes. However, the men thought differently after coming home from war. They thought that there was nothing to be satisfied over. Women didn’t know what war looked like other than hearing stories from friends and their husbands. During WWI women wanted their husbands to go to war and be a hero for their country. Since they didn’t have a T.V they didn’t know how bad it actually would be. As of the 21st century, women don’t want their husband to leave and rather for them to stay home. In the movie “Saving Private Ryan” D-Day was nothing glorious, death of their lovers who they saw as heroes. As women sent loving letters and made socks, they did not know the conditions the men were in. This is why we should be thankful for the heroes who devoted their lives to save others. “Break of Day in the Trenches” Life being compared to rat is one thing we humans wish was not compared to. In Rosenberg’s poem he does. Calling the rat sardonic shows that the rat is giving the voice in the poem a mocking look. The rat is one of two symbols in the poem to subvert pastoral mode in him poem. The other is the poppy as the symbol of the dead man’s blood. The rat has more freedom and can survive on its own, but soldiers had no freedom and had to follow commands. The rat doesn’t have feeling towards one side to another, but since the voice does he would be shot and not the rat. The corpse’s in the bowels of the Earth is a metaphor of bodies in no man’s land. When the character in the poem plucked the poppy out of the ground it is started to die which is ironic because the character knows this and will probably assume his fate, which might come to an end.

Pan's Labyrinth Mis en scene

Setting, Props, and Lighting: The lighting in this scene has some natural lighting from the fire, and the lights on the ceiling. Fill Lighting also allows other objects to obtain light to show that they exist when the natural lighting isn’t hitting that object. The props have a musty, old temple feel and have ton of detail to give the full effect of a temple type room. Different shapes and of sizes also allow the room to be unique and different from different scenes and movies. The setting provides easy detection that in this room is from a very old time period with the paintings that have stories on them. With the walls, food, characters giving the view a time and place with awe. Costume, Make-up: The girl, Ofelia, is dressed as the normal school girl with her dress and books. The hand eyed creature has a well done costume. Pail white skin showing that it hasn’t seen the sun for years, skinny body showing it hasn’t eaten in many years. Make-up on the characters is well done. I couldn’t tell if there was any or not. It is a good thing that the viewer can’t see the make-up. Sound: We have digenetic when Ofelia eats the grape, when she touches the dagger (which has an enhanced sound); also the fire is the background crackling. Non- digenetic is the music creating suspense before she eats the grape and as the creature comes to life. Sound is very powerful in both ways from the creature breathing in to the music leading up to the horrible scene Ofelia was about to endure. Camera Angles: The camera is another person in the room, but is invisible and is capturing all the details the camera is providing. Cameras create a sense of danger by getting close ups on evil monsters and long shots to get the whole view of the surrounding area. Angles creating depth and height while creating a different perspective. One big thing is that the cameras can also tell the story. They walk us through the hall way into the main room introducing us to the table and three doors and then eventually the eyed creature. They create suspense like music, but in a visual way. As Ofelia eats the grape the camera follows the suspense to the monster as it comes to life. It’s a wonderful visual to get different actions in the movie.

Blog #3

http://www.allbestarticles.com/society/how-technology-has-changed-society-as-we-know-it.html

Technology has affected almost everyone on planet Earth. Before today’s technology a cell phone Technology has affected almost everyone on planet Earth. Before today’s technology a cell phone was considered to be a helpful tool only to call people whom you needed to speak with. Today, however everyone is glued to their cell phone texting their friends and sending pictures and video through this large wave linked world. We are being corrupted by this device that allows us to check our Facebook and Twitter and other social network sites. Going back not too long ago none of these existed.

I remember hanging out side with my friends playing football and seeing other kids enjoying the outdoors. When these products of technology came out, football began to vanish. In February 2013 I went on a Crew (Boy Scouts) campout and almost everyone there was focused on their MP3 players, Ipod Touches, IPads and cell phones. What a waste of enjoying the outdoors that was. I loved it when all this technology didn’t affect our daily lives. Yes it is nice to have, but we don’t NEED it to survive off of.

From the Center of Media Literacy they said that, “media literacy provides a framework to access, analyze, evaluate and create messages in a variety of forms - from print to video to the Internet”. The world practically uses media literacy every day in the 21st century. Then I would call myself media literate. I do because to be considered media literate you must be able to create media in any format and speak to the media in any format. I have a Facebook and I must have created my own media page. Then while on Facebook I do at times make posts and they tend to be written like anyone else using Facebook.

I agree with some of what he has said in his excerpt. I think some of it can be true and some it isn’t. Some people do get the fear that we will get things taken away from us; like Orwell thinks it will ban books. Then Huxley’s fear of the truth being drowned. These things people to fear and I totally agree with. The only thing that we might have trouble with is deciding who is right or who is wrong.

Blog #2 Design

This watermark type design to my blog really gives me this warmth of season. With the birds in the background it gives a visual effect of 3D depth than your traditional plain white screen. The tannish color to the back isn’t too bright and isn’t too dark. You are able to still see the words and other text in this blog. There are many different sizes of fonts. Not too thick or too thin because I don’t want the reader to squint or widen their eyes to accommodate the different size text.
The colors of the text are a reddish orange because I think it goes pretty well with the tan background. The other choices that were given didn’t have the right material. It was either too dark or to light. The text was the wrong colors, because even the color of the text can change the reader’s mood.  This color I chose is said to have an angry feel to it, but I think it is quickly cancel out by the background and the other black text. Overall, I think this was the best choice for my blog and I hope you guys agree with it too.

The Amazing Guy

I'm  Jason Groth and I enjoy playing cards games with my friends. Playing these games allows me to connect and have a wonderful time destroying them to no end. I like meeting new people and see what they like to do in their free time. Other than playing card games and meeting other people, I tend to seek out weird foods. Not to weird like at Jungle Jims, but more like foods I don't regularly eat everyday.
I am a Eagle Scout from Troop 194. I have spent about 11 years from Tiger Cub to Eagle. I have learned many new skills to apply to my everyday activities. Leadership has played a big role and carrying over my roles from the many positions in the Troop to marching band. I have played in the marching band for 4 years, but have been playing for 6 years, starting in sixth grade. These two activities have taught me a lot and I am happy I was able to meet every single person that I have attended with.
